Height/Physical Description: 3 to 4 feet in height and width. Dark green, thin and stiff upright leaves.
Use: Basketmaking and thick cord.
Harvesting: The leaves (reeds) are cut in 2 to 4 feet lengths.
Preparation: The basket maker is said to take one end of the rush/reed with her teeth and then splits it into 3 separate equal pieces called withes. The tough reeds from this plant were used to make loosely woven baskets that could be used to collect foods and to leach acorn meal.
