Plant Name: Blackberry Vine
Botanical Name: Rubus (Rosaceae)
Note: The blackberry plant that is in the garden was donated when the garden was originally our Southwestern Edible Garden. The type is unknown. The true plant on the Tribal list is “rubus villosus” or wild blackberry. As yet, we have not been able to procure this plant to add to our garden but hope a donation will come eventually.
Native Name: Pikwlyam
Height/Physical Description: Small shrub 3 to 6 feet in height and width. Abundant berries in Summer.
Use: Food and medicinal. Edible berries eaten fresh or dried for later use. Roots could be boiled to make a tea to treat diarrhea.
Harvesting: Summer.
Preparation: Edible berries eaten fresh or dried.
